How to customise shop bought garlands

Add a personal touch to the floral garlands for your wedding

After you have chosen the ready-assembled floral garlands for your wedding, why not have fun and get creative with them? Adding some carefully chosen embellishments will add a personal note to their visual appeal.

Here is how to have fun personalising your floral garlands in 5 easy steps:

1. Select your floral garland

Select the floral garlands or mixed greenery garlands that will complement the colouring of your décor. BloomsArt have a stunning collection of top quality floral garlands  in various colours ranging from striking magenta bougainvillea to the softest hues of Champagne rose blossom (https://shopbloomsart.com/. Alternatively, you can choose the stylish White Wedding Eucalyptus Garland which features a variety of gorgeous flowers and rich variegated foliage. This garland is the perfect base for introducing colourful highlights. Likewise, the Mixed Foliage Garland with its 15 different types of foliage is the perfect blank canvas to customise.

2. Plan how you want to personalise them

Floral garlands are strong and flexible so it will be much easier working with them than fresh flowers and the garlands come with full installation instructions. It is best to add any decorations to the floral garlands before you put the garlands in place and this can be done weeks before ‘the big day’ before life gets too busy! Give some thought to where you are going to place the different garlands and the overall look that you want to achieve. You can either distribute the decorations evenly along the length of the floral garland or you can concentrate them into certain areas to create focal points.

3. Choose some stylish decorations

There are a variety of decorations that you can buy for your floral garlands. Good hunting grounds for these are craft  and cake decorating shops, as well as online shops such as Etsy and eBay. The important point is to plan how many decorations you would like to add – remembering the phrase ‘little is more’. Each floral garland is beautiful in its own right so it is best to adorn them with just a few well-placed decorations. Options include:

  • Ribbons and bows in your theme colour

  • Strings of faux pearls, gems or crystals that will catch the light

  • Initials or hearts

  • Coloured feathers – great for developing a Bohemian or vintage theme

  • Butterflies

  • Miniature ornaments to reflect your professions or hobbies

  • Miniature photo frames

  • Themed accessories – such as seashells for a beach theme

  • Seasonal decorations such as craft Easter eggs and fluffy chickens or snowflakes

  • Pretty LED fairy lights – either coloured or clear

  • LED candles

  • Miniature bags of fresh lavender or dried herbs for fragrance.

When you are buying the supplementary  decorations for your floral garlands, make sure you buy a few extra of each to keep as ‘ safety back-ups’.

4. Plan your designs

It is important to take your time completing this stage as it will be tricky trying to remove the decorations once they are in place. It is important to remember the sides of the garland as well as the top – for example – if you are draping the garlands along tables for your wedding reception.

Experiment with layering and combining different decorations – mixing colours, textures and shapes to achieve the desired effect.

Stretch the garland out flat on a long table and lay each decoration in place, making sure that they are evenly spaced and look good from different angles etc.

5. Carefully attach the decorations

Starting at one end of the garland, carefully attach each decoration in turn. Make sure that all the decorations are firmly attached to the garland before you install the garland. There are several different ways to attach the decorations to the floral garland –

For small, lightweight decorations:

For small decorative additions like beads, pearls and paper butterflies you can use hot glue, craft wire or florist’s tape to secure them. If you are using hot glue on paper or cloth, it is best to do a patch test first to ensure the colour does not run.

For larger decorations:

Larger decorations will be heavier and it is best that these are attached to your floral garlands using florist’s wire or twist ties- in a colour that will not show.

Miniature ornaments and charms may not be large, but they could be a little heavier and are best attached with small clips, twist ties – or cable ties- but make sure these are well- concealed.

Once all the decorations have been fixed to the garland, check that each one is secure and that there are no loose ends to avoid snagging or unravelling as this will give your floral garlands a lovely polished look.

Once your personalised floral garlands are in place in the church or Register office or at the reception on tables, around doorways or mirrors, you will be delighted with the result as they will add charm and personality to your special day.
